Meet Maxine. Sweet. Terrifed. In need of a loving human who can make her feel secure in the world. You see, Maxine spent the first three years of her life in a puppy mill in central Mississippi. She lived in a cage with no human contact, other than when someone came to take her puppies away to sell them. By the time the ASPCA raided the place in fall 2009, Maxine was one of just four bassets who was still alive. The others had starved to death. Maxine was thin and frightened when she got to her foster home, but she has made great improvements. The other dogs in her foster home have taught her how to play, and what a toy is. Her foster mom has taught her that hands can pet as well as hit, and Maxine has discovered the joy of belly rubs. She will actually roll over now and ask for one. Maxine lived in a cage for so long she will only let her foster mom give her that belly rub when she is in her crate. It's sad; when she wants attention, she runs into her crate, rolls over on her back and wags her tail until her foster mom come over and loves on her. She is still uncertain around new people, and she needs a special human who can help her continue to learn to trust and love. She's a small girl, weighing about 32 pounds, with shiny ebony fur and a sweet face. She is so ready to be loved and cherished by someone. If you are patient soul who can give Maxine healing love and a forever home, please fill out an adoption form right now at our web site.
