We lost Wally the morning of June 23, 2006. Our resident senior and very much loved big loving boy is gone. Wally came to us on November 13, 2003 from the Memphis Animal Shelter. We think he was turned in to the shelter by the family of a woman who loved Wally but either died or had to go to a nursing home. He was at least 10 years old, crippled by arthritis and very over weight. He was a big boy weighing over 80 pounds and very, very food oriented. He would sit up on his but for a treat. We stopped that activity and reduced his weight and his activity level improved. Wally was a gentle sole with an indomitable spirit. As he got older his arthritis worsened but he still loved his walk abouts in our large front yard. Now when ever we look out at our front yard we will remember his valiant and stubborn resolve to sniff every nook and cranny, every blade of grass. He was slow moving and had to rest often but nothing deterred him from his rounds. Oh God I miss him. Wally passed peacefully in his sleep from natural causes with Clara beside him at our vet's office. It was just time for him to go. We will see him again when we cross the rainbow bridge to meet again. - Randall & Clara You cannot know how wonderful bassets are until you have been loved by an older basset
