In Feb 2003, Tammy wrote - My friends didn't want me to adopt a 12 year old dog… they didn't want me to get my heart broken over what we all thought would be a short term commitment. Ubu is now in his 17th year and is as healthy as a horse. He is such a little clown that everyone he meets becomes attached to him. The same folks who tried to talk me out of the adoption are now convinced he will outlive us all. We (my 12 year old Basset and I) have long since adapted to Ubu's "little old man" routines: his feeding schedules, his times to patrol our fence-line and his naps. Despite his questionable treatment in the past (an X-ray showed shotgun pellets in his behind) this is the most loving, gentle dog. Not only is he my "poster child" for senior adoption, he is a long-eared lesson for all of us in forgiveness and acceptance." On 3/17/2003, Ubu
quietly went to the Rainbow
Bridge with Tammy holding him. Ubu lived as a very spoiled and loved companion
for the remainder of his life. He is greatly missed.
The Life and Times of Sir Duncan Duncan was on death row at the Memphis Animal Shelter. A friend called us about him and I went to see about him. When I saw him I new he was not all basset but he was sweet and very loving even in the shelter. He was a young dog picked up as a stray. An act of faith, a voice in my hear (you just have to try), is all that allows me to tell Duncan's story and express our, and his new owners joy. I did the paperwork, paid the money, and then waited to see if he was heartworm negative. If he tested positive, that was it. He could not be adopted. He tested negative and was scheduled for neutering. I picked him up the next day and carried him to my car. We added Duncan to our family of five bassets and soon he was just like one of the pack. Andrew had Duncan became fast friends. Running and romping together most of the time they were not sleeping. We had Duncan for almost six months. In that time he grew, and grew, and grew. It became obvious that he was a basset rottweiler mix with the best attributes of both breeds. He was easy going and loyal, alert when awake yet slept like a log, and very affectionate. He took to house training easily but liked to chew which is expected with a young dog. He was first adopted by a lady who loved him greatly but she became seriously ill within a month of adopting Duncan. We took Duncan back joyfully. We had missed him. A month later he had another family and we said good by to Duncan a second time. This has got to be one of the hardest parts of rescuing.
