On
May 13,2005 we made a very hard decision. We helped Charlotte cross the Rainbow
Bridge. This was a very hard decision. One we discussed with our vet at length.
Yesterday Charlotte did not eat. This morning she was laying in a pool of blood
in our dining room. She could not stand on her back legs. Charlotte's kidneys
had failed and she was in allot of discomfort. We simply could not let her endure
any more pain. We loved and petted Charlotte as she passed to a better world.
She was with us only a short time but she gave us a heart of love. We will see
her again when we cross the rainbow bridge to meet again. Charlott's story

No body would adopt Mr. Otis because he always had at least one open oozing cyst. After much discussion and sole searching Odie went to our vet for laser surgery to remove all of his cysts. Odie returned to us shaved over half of his body and with at least 300 staples. Did he complain? Not at all. He announced his happiness at being back home with vigor. In the next few days Odie learned to hate the e-collar. We would remove it for his meals but when we tried to put it back on a quick flip of his head would often send the e-collar sailing across the room. I did say Odie was smart didn't I? In those long days of recovery Mr. Otis learned he was loved and used that knowledge to worm his way onto our bed and under the covers of our bed. He had long ago wormed his way into our hearts. Odie could not jump up on our bed but easily communicated his need to be boosted. He would then proceed to root under the covers. As I said at the beginning, today a very special basset left our care for a new home. But we know Mr. Otis is in a home that loves him at least as much as much as we did and they will probably learn the even greater depths of Mr. Odie's love. Today we took in another foster basset, Nascar, from the Olive Branch Animal Shelter in Mississippi. Will he be as special as Mr. Otis? That is not possible but he may be just as special in a different way. We do not know. No basset will be the same as Mr. Otis. But we also know that Nascar, and all of our other 16 foster bassets are special in their own way. Each basset is special in his or her way and some tug on our hearts more than others. We never know when another "special basset" will enter our lives and your hearts. You will never know when a Special Basset will enter our life until you let it happen. Please consider becoming a foster home to a basset. Yes it will hurt, but you will grow as a person in the process and learn to love at least one basset. And maybe, you will be privileged enough to know and love a special basset like Mr. Otis. Odie, our hearts go with you to your new home. Randall & Clara West Tennessee Basset Rescue
